What’s Going on in Winchmore Hill?

The answer to that question is plenty – thanks to the community spirit, the residents’ association, and the extensive year-round programme of events which the various clubs and organisations put on.

Here estate agent Anthony Pepe, who can help if you are interested in a home for sale in Winchmore Hill, provide a rundown of the events which you can enjoy – and clubs which you can join – all of which are virtually on your doorstep if you move to the area.

A Question of Sport

In terms of sport in Winchmore Hill, there’s a thriving parkrun, which sets off every Saturday morning at 9am on a 5km course through Grovelands Park, pictured above – naturally enough, it’s called the Groveland Parkrun.

As with all parkruns, you don’t have to be an elite athlete to take part; although some people do use it as a training exercise for other events, you can be of any age or ability to join in.

There’s plenty of other sport as well – centred on the Winchmore Hill Sports Club. Alongside its league fixtures in cricket, football, tennis and table tennis, there are plenty of youth sessions as well if your son or daughter wants to take up a new sport.

In addition, there’s a golf society, with members playing at the nearby Bush Hill Park club. There’s also a thriving social scene in tandem with the sporting community, including events for children.

Festival Fayre

Winchmore Hill also hosts its own mini festival, called Wildstock. This is held at Woodcroft Wildspace nature reserve in Downes Court, a hidden oasis of wildlife in the heart of a residential area.

The festival has a very folky vibe – with lots of local performers, plenty of real ale, and the profits all going to local charities.

This year’s event is taking place on Sunday, September 29 – from 1-5pm. More information about the event can be found here.

Back to Nature

For those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, there’s another green space at Firs Farm, in Firs Lane on the edge of Winchmore Hill.

A registered charity, it opened this year and runs a variety of community events, several at the on-site café, with facilities available for hire. There are also plans to develop the sporting side, with new hockey and football pitches, as well as outdoor table tennis and tennis courts.

However, the heart of the project is the chance to enjoy nature – wetlands were constructed on the site (to ease flooding risk) and this has created a much richer wildlife habitat for everyone to enjoy - including an abundance of trees and shrubs (and wildflowers). While it’s continuing to develop, it’s already a great spot for local school trips.

Getting Involved

For the proactive, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved, not just with the organisations and clubs listed above, but also with the local residents’ association.

This association keeps its finger on the pulse of all local issues – whether it’s improving the railway station, publicising the Christmas events (including the tree lights switch-on and the carols on the Green) or keeping everyone abreast of any political matters.

You could also help out at one of Winchmore Hill various churches. For instance, St Paul’s Church, as well as all the regular services, has a neighbourhood support team established ahead of the first Covid lockdown, and is often looking for volunteers to help out behind the scenes.

It’s all too easy to see that Winchmore Hill has a community feel to it that is well worth keeping.
