Like most of our team, we’re guessing that Haringey’s twin towns are a mystery to you too, but things are about to change! You may think that a town’s twinning doesn’t affect your life but at Anthony Pepe we make it our business to know all about our hometown and Haringey’s twin towns might just surprise you! In an attempt to forge friendships between different countries after the Second World War, many towns throughout the UK were twinned together and for an unknown reason, Haringey was paired with more than most. In fact, Haringey has 8 twin towns in total so join us as we take you on a journey around the world as we ask, how much do you know about Haringey’s twin towns?
Koblenz in Germany
Haringey has been paired with Koblenz since 1969, a picturesque town that is also referred to as Germany’s most beautiful corner and indeed it is. Surrounded by mountains that appear to kiss the sky, filled with cultural monuments and narrow lanes leading to squares, promenades and the river that flows through the town, Koblenz is as pretty in person as it sounds.
Arima in Trinidad and Tobago
Located in east Trinidad, Arima petitioned Queen Victoria for municipal status as part of her Golden Jubilee in 1887 and even became a Royal Borough just a year later. The town hosts several carnivals and parades through the sun-drenched streets and is considered the gateway to the north-eastern region of Trinidad, just a short drive from the Port-of-Spain. As the country’s third largest populated town the community enjoys culture, entertainment and of course an envious tropical climate.
Clarendon in Jamaica
Clarendon was actually named by the British in honour of Lord Clarendon, the Chancellor of England and has several historic sites, buildings and monuments throughout the town. Clarendon has produced an impressive list of Jamaican personalities including musicians, actors and sportsmen and women much like our very own Haringey.
Holetown in St. James, Barbados
The small town located on the Caribbean island of Barbados has been twinned with Haringey since 2009, although the English first landed in the town in 1625 making the history of the twinning quite significant. The town is fun and friendly hosting a variety of local festivals and parades. Along the beach, you’ll find a selection of restaurants and the refreshing sea breeze will invite you to enjoy walks along the tropical sands as you watch the sunset on the crashing waves. Definitely somewhere to add to your bucket list of places to visit.
Larnaca in Cyprus
Found on the coast of Cyprus is the popular seaside town of Larnaca, perhaps more well-known to holidaymakers than as one of Haringey’s twin towns, it is one of our favourites on this list. The town has a famous promenade known as Finikoudes where locals and visitors enjoy morning coffees, evening drinks or lazy beach days, it sounds like our kind of place!
Livry-Gargan in France
Livry-Gargan is in fact, a suburb of Paris, although the town is relatively small with a population of just over 40,000, the community is actually twinned with 3 other towns in Europe. As Haringey’s closest twin town you can visit the area to sample the classic French wine, enjoy the blue skies or even partake in a round of golf!
Sundbyberg in Sweden
Cuisine, culture and copious amounts and green landscapes is the best way to describe Sundbyberg. Putting the environment first Sundbyberg is a member of Sweden’s ecological towns focusing its concerns the future of recycling. Similar to Haringey the town does have several beauty spots including Rissne Manor and Marabou Park, as well as a central shopping centre and transport links into Stockholm.
Jalasjarvi in Finland
Jalasjarvi is actually a village in Finland and is the smallest on our list with a population of just 8,000. Very little history and facts can be found about the area, however, it is home to Europe’s deepest ground erosion, named the Devil’s Nest, a trip here would certainly be interesting!
