Tottenham Hotspur FC

The borough of Haringey covers an area of 11 square miles and includes Tottenham in the east. The football club, which was formed in 1882, has always been based within the borough – initially at the Park Lane end of Tottenham Marshes, then at Northumberland Park, and (until 2019) at White Hart Lane off Tottenham High Road.

Growing attendances eventually meant that the White Hart Lane stadium became too small for the club. After exploring a few options – one of which involved taking over the London Stadium built for the 2012 London Olympics – the club settled on building a new ground immediately to the north of the existing ground.

Construction work on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium began in 2016, and the first competitive match took place in 2019. The stadium, pictured, has also hosted American football, boxing and rugby union matches, as well as a number of high-profile pop concerts. Beyonce, Guns’n’Roses and Lady Gaga have all performed there.

The new football ground is only a small part of the overall development, which is known as the Northumberland Development Project.

The whole scheme also includes more than 500 new homes, a 180-bedroom hotel, a community health centre, a supermarket, and a sixth form college, as well as the club’s headquarters, a club museum and the main club shop.

Other Sporting Connections

Haringey isn’t just the home of Spurs – there are plenty of other sporting facilities in the borough. These include the Haringey Athletics Club, which is now known as Enfield and Haringey AC. Famous athletes who have represented the club include Sebastian Coe, Gary and Heather Oakes, and Mike McFarlane – all of whom won medals representing Great Britain.

One of the club’s bases is at the White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre, which is within walking distance of the new football stadium. The centre is, or has been, home to local rugby union and rugby league teams and Haringey Cycling Club. The facility has a capacity for a crowd of around 1,000 people, and it has hosted the Britbowl, the British equivalent of the American football Superbowl, as well as the Middlesex nines rugby league tournament.
