Before we start this week’s blog post, we should probably give you some help on what ‘Hygge’ actually is. No it isn’t a new dance move, its pronounced hue-gar and is a Danish idea that’s taking over our homes. In fact, you may have already have some elements of hygge in your home and we’re certain that you’ll soon have a lot more! The Collins Dictionary describes hygge as ‘an abstract Danish concept of cosiness and well-being’ and we couldn’t agree more. The definition was only submitted in February this year, proving just how new this trend really is, so get comfortable as we set the scene…
As autumn marches towards winter the branches become bare and you begin to wrap yourselves in the warmth of woollen scarves and fur-lined mittens. Outside the pools of leaves line your streets but inside your home can ooze serenity and relaxation through the power of hygge. London is often labelled as an intense and sometimes stressful place to live but you can create your own bubble of calm by embracing some classic hygge ideas.
Light a candle, or ten!
If you’ve already got some candles in your home, get some more! Nothing screams ‘cosy’ more than flickering candles in front of the television on a Sunday evening. Choose your favourite scented candles and mix them with different sizes and shapes placed in random clusters around your home. The Danes are rumoured to be one of the largest consumers of candles in the world and we’re not surprised, they somehow transform your home into a hidden log cabin in the woods. Try using scents such as brewed tea, baked strawberry cake and wild mint to really achieve the hygge aroma.
Invest in a knitted blanket
The ultimate in comfort must be a chunky knitted throw to snuggle under after a hard day at work. Choose pastel colours and tones of grey for the essential hygge accessory, adding texture to your home instantly warms and relaxes you as you enter the room. You may even want to add some cushions and faux fur rugs to add another level of texture to the Scandinavian trend.
Change into your ‘comfies’
At home do you have a set of clothes that you change into that aren’t your pyjamas? These are called your ‘comfies’ and this type of loungewear is essential when adding some hygge to your home. From cotton to cashmere your choice of loungewear can be as luxurious or laidback as you want, the fundamental factor is comfort so buy whatever makes you happy.
Lamps not lights
Turn off the lights and turn on some lamps, this will set the atmosphere and allow hygge to flow through your home. Soft lighting is perfect during this time of year and will instantly make you feel relaxed, bringing your stress levels down and spreading a sense of calm in each room. If you have a fireplace or log burner you can heat up your home and use the flickering flames to light your living room, paired with fluffy socks and a thick jumper you’re set for the ultimate hygge night in.
Pop the kettle on
What better way to relax than with a warm drink, forget about tea and coffee we’re taking it to the next level with hot chocolate. We’ll allow you to choose from marshmallows or whipped cream as your topping as long as you drink it with your feet up and preferably with your family or friends.
There’s a reason why Denmark’s inhabitants are known for being the happiest in the world and we’re sure hygge has something to do with it, it’s said to make homes nicer and people happier making it the perfect concept if you’re selling your home. As you settle down with a thick-knit blanket in front of the fire explore the rest of Anthony Pepe and see how we can help you buy, sell or let your home this winter.
