What are the Attractions of Living in Enfield?

Whether you are talking about the town or the borough, Enfield has plenty going for it, making it one of the most attractive parts of North London to move to. Anthony Pepe can help if you are looking for a house for sale in Enfield or a property to rent; here we explain the differences between the two places, and also focus on the town’s key features.

The Town or the Borough?

Much like Harringay or Haringey, when we talk about Enfield, we are talking about two distinct places. One is a North London market town, which was originally part of the county of Middlesex until becoming part of Greater London, and the other is the wider London borough in which it is situated – and which also includes Edmonton, Southgate, Winchmore Hill and Palmers Green.

The borough is part of Outer London and has a population of around 330,000 (the population of the town of Enfield is around half that figure).

The Green Spaces

One of the attractions of Enfield is the large number of green spaces open to the public. In the town there are plenty of areas to relax – including the Town Park, Chase Green (and Gardens), and Library Green. The first of these boasts basketball and tennis courts, a small boating lake, a children’s play area, and a caf&ecute;.

Across the wider borough there are more than 2,000 acres of public parks and open spaces. This includes Broomfield Park and Grovelands Park in Southgate, Jubilee Park in Edmonton, and Trent Country Park in Cockfosters.

The Excellent Transport Connections

With all this open space, it’s easy to forget that Enfield the town is just a few minutes away from Central London – it’s only 19 miles north of Charing Cross.

Enfield Town Station is one of three northern termini of the Lea Valley overground line, which runs two services per hour to Liverpool Street. To the west of the town centre is Enfield Chase station, which is on the Hertford Loop line and runs services to (among others) Moorgate, Stevenage and Hertford North. The West Anglia Main line also operate services which run through parts of the town.

In terms of road infrastructure, the A10 runs just past the eastern edge of the town (in a north-south direction) while the M25 is only a matter of minutes away to the north. London Buses operate a number of services to and from the town, including two night services, if you don’t fancy driving anywhere.

The Rich History

Whether you’re looking to live in Enfield or just visit, there’s plenty to see if you have an interest in local history.

The Market in the town centre was granted a charter in 1303 and, after a few fluctuations, still operates today and is pictured above. A 16th century manor house, known locally as Enfield Palace, was demolished but its name lives on in the Palace Gardens Shopping Centre which is home to many big stores.

The poet Keats attended progressive Clarke's School in Enfield, in the early 19th century, although (again) the original building has since been demolished. Of the buildings that are still standing, parts of St Andrew’s Parish Church date back to the 13th century (although much of it was built more recently).

In more recent times, Enfield town has a notable claim to fame – actor Reg Varney opened the world’s first cashpoint in the town, at Barclays Bank in June 1967.
